Training Clinics Start in January
Greeting Palm Creek Pickleball Club Members,
Happy New Year and Best Wishes for a Pickleball Filled Year in 2014 from the Training Group!
With that in Mind the Training Group is once again offering Skill Sessions to all of our Members, beginning this coming Friday! These Skill Sessions will assist you in developing specific aspects of your Pickleball Game, depending on the course you sign up for the instructors will demonstrate techniques in each skill allowing you to take away what you need to practice the skill or skills until you have mastered them!
The signup Sheets for all Skill Sessions will be located on the South Side, of the Big Blue board, near the bottom, between courts 9-16 and 17-24 and all signup sheets will be posted at least one week prior to the Skill Session running. There is already a signup sheet posted for our first Skill Sessions at the 2.5 Skill Level, please read the Prerequisites listed for each skill session to be sure you are in the correct place to get the most benefit from the session before signing up, these begin filling up very quickly once we everyone arrives so check the Blue Board OFTEN as there will be a total of 15 different Sessions offered from this Friday, January 3rd, through to Wednesday, February 12th. If you have something come up, please be courteous and remove your name so that someone else can benefit from the session.
There are Lessons in Dinking, Lobbing, Volleying at the net and so on, with each being offered at different times for YOUR skill level! Our instructors are pleased to help you with your game and eager to have your feedback on all of the sessions you attend. Please take a couple of minutes to tell us what you think on a short evaluation form available at each session.
We are always looking for folks who would enjoy helping out with the training, and there are a few spots open for positive folks who enjoy training and mentoring fellow Pickleball players into the sport we all LOVE! So if you have skills in the area of adult training, or if you are enthusiastic and willing to learn, please respond to me and I will connect you with the appropriate Instructor or with our new “Coach”!
Thank you all and please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.
See You On The Courts!

Pickleball Co-Founder Barney McCallum
Pickleball Ambassadors and players had a special treat this year. Barney (now 87 years old). Sponsored this year's Ambassador dinner. Barney talked to us about the origin of the games, the processes involved in making the rules for a brand new game . As with any enterprise, he also shared some of the start up pains. Barney spent a lot of time at the courts watching many of the matches. It appeared that he truly enjoyed long days at the court, appreciating the growth of the sport and the joy the sport has given to so many.

For all Palm Creek Pickleball Players
Please fill out this form completely, the information collected assists the board in making informed decisions.
Think of this as a 2 part process
Part 1 - Submitting the completed form, will automatically make you a club member, you will receive updates from the club, you will be added the club roster. A new form must be completed each season, your skill level, site #, e-mail etc. may have changed. Each player is to complete their own form.
Part 2 - Pay to play. There are several choices on the attached form.
The seasonal fees remained the same as last year. Players who pay the seasonal fee, will be given a sticker for their badge, indicating that they have paid for the season, this is also updated on the roster. Paying the seasonal fee has made it better for all!
Players over the course of the season save money, check in for organized play is quicker, you no longer have to think about taking money to the courts. If you are only at the courts for open play, it is requested that you pay the seasonal fee.
With these fees, the club supplies the balls for the courts, training paddles, pays for all the ink, paper and signage to keep the club organized and the annual pizza party!
( Balls etc. are not supplied by Palm Creek for the courts.) If you choose not to participate as a club member, pickleball's are available in the pro shop for purchase.
On November 18th, organized play will start, forms and fees will be collected at the courts by Board Members, Round Robin Captains and the Welcome table.
Questions: Can readily be answered at the courts

Softball being a huge event with 300 teams. Jerry Winter competes every year in both Softball and Pickleball. I understand Lauri Scott was coaching softball and John and Della Bass were also competing.
Lana Ennis and her husband compete in Cowboy Shooting!
Gary Baker - Gold - Men's 4.0 Barb Schmidt - Bronze - Women's Singles Alvin Hager - Silver Men's 5.0 Not Shown - Mike Dobson - Silver - Men's Age |
Everyone said competition was really tough this year (it makes sense that the "really serious" players registered early) . This makes these medals "extra special".
an additional 5 members cheering for the players
Mission Royale had 7 players competing, they joined us in our social activities
This is my 5th and final year as "Social Coordinator" for these games, hopefully someone will step forward to take this on next year. I will be happy to provide the templates!
With the daily return of all our club members, we are looking forward to a GREAT season!

Article of Interest
Pickleball
Science
or
Why YOU should wear
eye protection
After I was hit in the eye playing Pickleball, I wondered why I hadn't been able to protect myself. So on Sunday, January 23, 2011 at the Ogden Community Center I recorded the sounds of Pickleball play. I analyzed the recording to find the shortest time between two hits when both players were at or near the no-volley lines.
It frequently took between 350 and 400 millisecond for a slammed ball to travel from one paddle to the other, and once the time was only 250 milliseconds (one quarter of a second).
Now consider that your reaction time, the time from when you see the ball hit the opponents paddle to the time you can begin to move a muscle in response, is probably between 200 and 300 milliseconds. (You can test yourself at this website: www.mathsisfun.com/games/reaction-time.html)
If you then start to move the paddle to intercept the ball (or protect your face) it will take additional time to get the paddle where you want it. In testing I performed, it took me at least 55 milliseconds to move just the first 8.25 inches (the width of the paddle).
Taking the 350 millisecond transit time and subtracting 200 milliseconds for reaction time and 55 milliseconds for the first 8.25 inches of paddle movement, only 95 milliseconds (less than one tenth of a second) remains to move the paddle the rest of the way to where you want it. It can't be done!
So even the fastest of you can’t protect yourself from an opponent’s hard slam from the no-volley line if you wait to see where the ball is going. You can't protect your eyes with your paddle or even turn you head in the time you have. You may be able to anticipate your opponents intent to slam and gain a little time to react, but by the time you see the ball headed toward your face, it’s way too late.
So your options are:
· Look away before the ball is hit (and lose the point).
· Play the odds that the ball probably won’t hit your eye (and risk your sight).
· Wear protective eye wear (and perhaps look less than stylish).
My vote is for the eye wear. Simple lens-less racquetball glasses are perfect for those who don’t wear glasses or wear contacts. You can find a wide selection of protective eye wear on the internet and there are a few are available for use over glasses. Safety glasses are another option.
I wish I’d started wearing protective eyewear before I got hit in the eye in the summer of 2010. Internal bleeding in the eye and a small tear in the retina resulted. Fortunately most of my eye damage wasn’t permanent. You might not be so lucky!

Pickleball Super Bowl Ad ???
This was forwarded to me in an e-mail:
This is Tim Wright and Pickleballcentral is in a competition to win a 90 second spot for a commercial during the Super Bowl. This is for small businesses and I was wondering if you would be able to spread the word with and others that love Pickleball. I've attached a link that allows you to vote once a day. I think it would be neat to see a commercial during the biggest sporting event of the year.
Thanks,
Tim Wright

Our club members are truly exceptional in promoting pickleball. After volunteering all season, you would think they would take the summer off!
Our very own Dean Wineinger and Dick Walker were instrumental in getting 10 new courts in Topeka, Kansas. The attached link, is the news arcticle printed in The Topeka Capital-Journal.

Travel to Senior Games
I cannot make any representation about this company, I received the following e-mail and am sharing it, as it may be of benefit to USAPA members Please be sure to update me with any experiences good or bad
RosemaryReese@aol.com
As a USAPA member and with the approval of Justin Maloof,
Executive Director of USAPA we are reaching out to the local
ambassadors to introduce ourselves and our company—BLASTT,
Beyond Limits Active Senior Tours & Travel, LLC -- a tour
and travel company specializing in taking participants to
Senior Games competitions all over the U.S.
We provide a one-stop solution including travel assistance,
airport transfers, luxury accommodations, transportation
services to and from the Games events, social hospitality
and local site-seeing excursions.
Because many of the Senior Games are USAPA-sanctioned
events, we would like to invite those players who may have
an interest to join one or more of our 2014 trips. As an
incentive we will offer a 10% discount on all tour packages
for USAPA members.
If you are interested in learning more please visit our web
site, give us a call, send us an email or see our ad on the
USAPA web page. We would be happy to provide your area
member with our 2014 tour schedule brochure.
We plan to be at the National Pickleball Tournament and hope
to see you there!
Best regards,
Doug & Marianne Hamilton, Co-pilots
